MADDALENA: A WAY OF ACCESS TO THE WORLD DREAMED BY MARCELLO
Rich and bored, Maddalena also wears a mask: that of the fatal woman, that of the cynical woman who cares nothing more than wealth, glamor, fame, and be an object of desire.
But in reality, the mask she wears serves her to hide the desperate need to be loved as a woman and not as a symbol of the sweet life that Marcello tries to reach through her
Maddalena represents the decadence of an old class, sometimes noble, sometimes only rich, living in a golden cage, far from ugliness and marginality.
But this life seems to be marked by boredom, by everything is already done, by nothing new, by the lack of challenges, so much so that in Madallena it causes a profound depression linked to the sense of uselessness of its existence.
So making love in the house of a prostitute, in a horrible basement, becomes for Maddalena a way to escape from this cage for at least one night and feel alive.
Maddalena wears the mask of the prostitute to give her body to Marcello, because in this way she does not have to show him her true face … but in reality, this does not succeed at all, and for a moment she shows her true self to Marcello.
But in the morning everything ends, everyone wears his masks and everyone returns to the big human circus for the show that awaits him
