c2) Cruelty and Evil

C2 CRUELTY

Attila is used by Bertolucci to convey an anti-Fascist message: the director’s goal is to provoke the audience’s rejection towards fascism.  To do this, on a deep level, he shows shocking scenes, such as the rape and murder of Patrizio. The child who admires Attila’s black gloves is raped and killed by the wearer: this is a metaphor of what fascism will reserve for the higher classes

Attila is always represented as the impersonation of the cruelty of fascism

Attila is always represented as the impersonation of evil

syllogism:

  1. Attila is  Evil
  2. Attila is Fascism
  3. Fascism is Evil

or

  1. Attila is Cruelty
  2. Attila is Fascism
  3. Fascism is Cruelty
