After the words of Alfredo the two friends / enemies begin to fight ..and the fight continues until, the elder Alfredo decides to lie down on the tracks, to be killed by the train
The scene is set in 1976, when Bertolucci accomplishes the film .. the death of the landlord is the expression of a hope of the director … the hope is that sooner or later the advent of a communist society put an end to an age of servants and masters forever
The final metaphor is that the path of the social progress is unstoppable
